Troubleshooting

A choice question shows Needs review

Faint or partial fills, two filled bubbles, and heavy erasure marks are not decided automatically; they go to the teacher. Answers that are only circled or ticked are, as a rule, not read as answers either, and go to the teacher.

Ask students to fill the box in firmly. Scan the answer sheets in color (or grayscale).

An answer sheet ends up in Pages to fix

The QR code could not be read, or the page could not be aligned. Check for folds, smudges or a strong tilt, and scan it again at 200 dpi or more.

Sheets printed smaller can still be read, but scan them at the same paper size you printed on.

Answer boxes are not suggested, or some are missing

Boxes are easier to find in a PDF saved straight from Word or Excel. Draw any missing box with Add a box by hand (steps).

I want to undo an edit

In sheet design, Ctrl + Z undoes and Ctrl + Y redoes (on a Mac, Command). If you closed the sheet without saving, Bring back edits on the red card at the top right restores the edits next time you open it.

Scoring64 does not open

Open Scoring64 from the Start menu again; on a Mac, from Applications. If it is already running, its window comes to the front. The first launch can take about 30 seconds.

I can't click Make the return ZIP

When a paid key expires, Scoring64 goes back to the free plan of 2 tests a month. You can still grade, correct and export tests you have started, design sheets, and view, back up and restore data. Grading new tests depends on the free tests left.

Register a new paid key under Free plan and license to grade without a limit on tests.

System and data

Is Scoring64 available in English?

Yes, on Windows and Mac from version 1.2.0. Screens, messages, returned PDFs, score sheets and exported files are all in English, and sheets designed in the app come in A4 and US Letter. Scoring64 follows your computer's language, and you can switch under the ? menu → Language.

Does it run on a Mac?

Yes, on Macs with Apple silicon (M1 or later). Intel Macs are not supported. Scoring64 is also on the Mac App Store, as a separate edition with in-app purchases.

See Getting started for downloading and installing. A confirmation may appear the first time you open it and after in-app updates; the same page explains what to do.

Do I need TeX to design sheets in the app?

Not if you only import PDFs from Word or Excel. Designing sheets in the app (New exam) uses TeX, which is free. If it is already on your computer, Scoring64 uses it.

If not, set it up from New exam or the ? menu. The light version takes 1–5 minutes, the full version 30 minutes to 2 hours, and the first setup needs the internet. Your computer's settings are not changed.

What do I do when a new version comes out?

When a new version has downloaded, Restart and update appears. Save the sheet you are editing, then update; Scoring64 restarts with the same data. If you choose Later, you can come back with Check for updates in the ? menu. Checking for updates needs the internet.

Older versions without automatic updates need the new installer once. Your data is kept.

Which scanner should I use?

Any that saves PDFs at 200–300 dpi. Your school's copier is fine; no special reader is needed.

A model with an automatic document feeder makes scanning a stack much easier.

Can it grade with AI?

Yes. Connect the Windows or Mac download to Codex or Claude Code running on the same computer, with the grading plugin. The AI compares each answer image with your answer key and partial-credit rubric, and enters the scores through Scoring64's screen. Scoring64 itself contains no AI model, and the teacher makes the final check. See AI grading.

Are answer sheets or grades ever sent outside my computer?

In regular on-screen grading and bubble reading, answer images, grades and class lists stay on your computer. When you grade with AI through Codex or Claude Code, the answer images and text the AI reads may be sent to the AI service you use. AI grading needs a connection.

How many computers can I use it on?

A paid license covers up to five computers in one classroom. For several sites, contact us for a quote. Each computer gets its own key; copying a key to another computer does not work. The free plan gives each computer 2 tests a month with every feature and no limit on students.

Data is kept on each computer. To move to another computer, use a backup.

How do I back up?

Back up all exams on the Export & backup tab saves every exam in one file. Make one each time you finish grading, and keep a copy somewhere else, such as a USB stick.

When there are changes since the last backup, Changes not backed up appears in yellow at the top right (No backup if it has been a long time). Even when it does not, a backup after each grading session is a good habit.

Pricing and licenses

Is there a limit on students?

No. Neither the free plan nor a paid license limits the number of students per test. The free plan covers 2 tests a month; a paid license has no limit on tests either. For several sites, contact us.

What happens when the free tests run out?

Every feature is free for 2 tests a month with no limit on students. When they run out, only grading a new test stops. You can still continue, correct and export tests you have started, design sheets, and view, back up and restore your data. The free tests reset on the 1st of each month, Japan time (JST).

How much is a paid license, and how do I buy one?

We are setting prices for schools and tutoring centers outside Japan, so for now we quote by email. Write to contact@fermion.company with your school or center name, your country and how many computers you plan to use. We will reply with a price and how to pay.

A key needs the computer's code shown in the app. See How a license key is issued.
